How the Build Optimiser Works

Our Baldur's Gate 3 Build Optimiser scores your character across four pillars. The total score ranges from 0 to 100, with each pillar weighted to reflect its impact on actual gameplay performance.

Stat Synergy — 40 points

How well your final ability scores align with your class needs. Primary stat contributes up to 20 pts, secondary up to 15 pts, and CON up to 5 pts.

Coverage — 30 points

Build health beyond your main stats. Rewards decent DEX and WIS, an efficient dump stat, and avoiding too many weak saves.

Racial Synergy — 20 points

How well your race complements your class. A +2 to your primary stat is worth 12 pts. Extra traits relevant to your playstyle add bonus points.

Background — 10 points

Thematic and skill overlap between your background and class. Ideal matches like Soldier + Fighter grant the full 10 points.

BG3 Point-Buy Explained

Baldur's Gate 3 uses the standard D&D 5e point-buy system. You start with 8 in every ability score and have 27 points to spend. No base score can exceed 15, and after racial bonuses the maximum at character creation is 17.

Score89101112131415
Cost01234579

Notice that 14 and 15 cost disproportionately more (7 and 9 points). This makes odd scores like 13 and 15 slightly inefficient unless you plan to reach an even number with your first Ability Score Improvement at level 4. For most builds, aiming for even final scores after racial bonuses is optimal.

Best Race-Class Combinations

Half-Elf Paladin

+2 CHA, +1 to two other stats. The most versatile race for any CHA-based class. Fey Ancestry gives advantage on charm saves — invaluable in BG3.

High Elf Wizard

+2 DEX, +1 INT, and a free cantrip. The cantrip gives you an extra option at level 1 before you unlock stronger spells.

Half-Orc Barbarian

+2 STR, +1 CON, Relentless Endurance, and Savage Attacks. The ultimate melee powerhouse with a built-in safety net.

Githyanki Fighter

+2 STR, +1 INT, Astral Knowledge, and Jump. Martial Prodigy gives weapon and armour proficiencies that normally require feats.

Drow Rogue

+2 DEX, +1 CHA, Superior Darkvision, and free spells. Faerie Fire and Darkness are both excellent utility for a stealthy character.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best class in Baldur's Gate 3? ▼
There is no single "best" class — it depends on your playstyle. Paladin and Sorcerer are consistently rated as top-tier due to their high burst damage and versatility. Cleric and Druid offer the strongest support and crowd control. For first-time players, Fighter (Battle Master) and Ranger (Gloom Stalker) are forgiving and powerful.
Should I use point-buy or roll for stats? ▼
Point-buy is recommended for balanced, fair gameplay — especially on higher difficulties. Rolling can give you higher totals but also leaves you vulnerable to bad rolls. For Honour Mode or Tactician difficulty, point-buy lets you plan a reliable build with no weak links.
How important is CON for casters? ▼
Very important. CON determines your hit points and your concentration saving throw — which keeps your buff and control spells active when you take damage. A Wizard with 8 CON will drop Hex or Haste after the first hit. Aim for at least 14 CON on any character, including full casters.
What level does BG3 cap at? ▼
Baldur's Gate 3 caps at level 12. This means you get three Ability Score Improvements (at levels 4, 8, and 12). Plan your final stats with these ASIs in mind — for example, starting with 16 in your primary stat and boosting it to 20 by level 8.
Is multiclassing worth it in BG3? ▼
Yes, but with the level 12 cap you have fewer levels to spread around than in tabletop D&D. Popular dips include 2 levels of Paladin on a Warlock or Sorcerer (for Divine Smite and armour), 1 level of Fighter on any martial (for Fighting Style), and 2 levels of Rogue on ranged builds (for Cunning Action). Our optimiser focuses on single-class builds for simplicity, but the stat advice applies to multis too.
Which subclass should I pick for my first playthrough? ▼
For beginners: Paladin (Oath of Devotion) for tanky melee, Wizard (Evocation) for straightforward blasting, Ranger (Hunter) for versatile ranged combat, and Cleric (Life Domain) for powerful healing. Avoid Wild Magic Sorcerer and Way of the Four Elements Monk on your first run — they require more system knowledge to use effectively.
