The 20% Rule: When Does a GPU Upgrade Actually Matter?
Human perception research consistently shows that frame-rate differences below 15–20% are imperceptible during normal gameplay. If your target GPU is only 10% faster, you will not feel it — regardless of how impressive the benchmark numbers look. This is why our calculator uses 20% as the minimum threshold for a "Worth It" verdict.
The jump that does feel transformative is roughly 40–60% — equivalent to two full GPU generations. That is the gap from an RTX 3070 to an RTX 4070, or from an RTX 4070 to an RTX 5080. Below 40% gain, the upgrade only makes sense if the net cost (after selling your current card) is very low.
Before upgrading, it is worth knowing your actual current FPS. Use our FPS Calculator to estimate your current GPU's performance in specific games at your resolution. If you are already hitting your monitor's refresh rate, an upgrade will give you headroom but no visible benefit until you also change your display — check the Monitor Hz vs FPS Matcher to find the right panel tier for your new GPU.

VRAM in 2025: Why 8 GB Is a Real Bottleneck
Several AAA titles released since 2023 regularly exceed 8 GB VRAM at 1440p ultra settings — including Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Hogwarts Legacy, Alan Wake 2, and Black Myth: Wukong. An RTX 4060 Ti with 8 GB VRAM will stutter or force lower texture settings in these titles, while the 16 GB variant of the same card handles them cleanly. Use our VRAM Estimator to calculate expected VRAM usage for your specific games and settings. If you plan to run path tracing, 16 GB is effectively the minimum.
8 GB VRAM
Sufficient for 1080p and light 1440p. Struggles at 1440p ultra / 4K in texture-heavy titles. Avoid for any new build.
12 GB VRAM
Good headroom for 1440p ultra. Some 4K titles may require texture compromises in 2025+.
16 GB+ VRAM
Future-proof through at least 2027. Comfortable at 4K ultra in all current titles. Recommended for any high-end build.
DLSS 4, FSR 4, and XeSS — Does AI Upscaling Change the Upgrade Math?
NVIDIA's DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation (RTX 50 series exclusive) can multiply rendered frames by up to 4×, making a raw rasterisation comparison between generations misleading for DLSS-supported titles. AMD's FSR 4 works similarly but on RX 9000 series cards. Intel XeSS runs on all hardware including Arc. Use our DLSS Quality Score Calculator to see how much resolution you are trading for performance at each quality preset.
The practical implication: in DLSS 4 titles, an RTX 5080 may deliver 2–3× the perceived frame rate of an RTX 4070 even though the raw rasterisation gain is ~85%. If your game library is DLSS 4–heavy, factor this into your verdict. Our calculator uses native rasterisation indices — the most conservative and universally applicable metric.
Don't Forget: Your PSU and Electricity Bill
High-end GPU upgrades can significantly increase total system power draw. The RTX 5090 has a 575 W TDP — requiring at least an 850 W PSU in most builds, and ideally 1000 W. Use our PSU Calculator to verify your power supply can handle the new card before buying. An underpowered PSU causes random crashes and can damage components.
Over a year of daily gaming, a 200 W increase in GPU draw costs roughly $25–$70 in extra electricity depending on your rate. Our Electricity Cost Calculator can give you the exact annual figure for your region and usage pattern — worth including in your total cost-of-ownership calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RTX 4070 to RTX 5080 upgrade worth it?
At MSRP ($999 target, ~$330 estimated resale for the 4070), the net cost is around $670 for an 85% performance gain at 1440p — roughly $7.90 per percent gained. Our calculator rates this Worth It. The VRAM upgrade from 12 GB to 16 GB is an additional bonus for demanding titles, and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is an RTX 50-exclusive feature that further widens the practical gap in supported games.
Should I upgrade GPU or CPU first?
Check which component is the bottleneck first. Set your game to 4K or maximum graphical settings: if your GPU sits at 99% utilisation while your CPU is below 70%, you are GPU-limited — the GPU upgrade will help. If your CPU is pegged at 90%+ with the GPU under-utilised, the GPU upgrade delivers almost nothing. Our RTX 60 Bottleneck Calculator identifies CPU/GPU pairing issues and recommends optimal combinations for RTX 50-series cards.
How much is my old GPU actually worth?
Resale values vary significantly with market timing. RTX 40-series cards currently sell for approximately 55–70% of MSRP; RTX 30-series cards fetch 35–50%. The most reliable method is to check eBay completed (sold) listings for your exact model and condition. Our calculator uses conservative database estimates — override the resale field with your real listing price for a precise net-cost figure.
Is the RX 9070 XT a better value than the RTX 5080?
For AAA rasterisation at 1440p, the RX 9070 XT delivers about 80% of the RTX 5080's performance at 60% of its price — making it the better value upgrade for most users. The RTX 5080 pulls ahead for ray tracing, DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, and 4K gaming. Use the "RTX 4070 → RX 9070 XT" preset in the calculator above to compare both options side by side with your own resale price factored in.
