How Elden Ring Level-Up Costs Work

Every level-up in Elden Ring costs a specific number of runes based on your current level. The cost isn't linear — it scales polynomially, meaning the jump from level 200 to 201 costs far more than the jump from 50 to 51. The community has datamined the exact formula used by FromSoftware:

cost(N) = floor( 0.02*N^3 + 3.06*N^2 + 105.6*N - 895 )

For levels 1–11, hardcoded values from the game are used instead. This calculator applies the exact polynomial so the rune counts match the in-game experience precisely.

Level RangeRunes RequiredCost per Level (avg)

10 → 20~10,350~1,035
50 → 60~78,400~7,840
100 → 150~1,580,000~31,600
150 → 200~4,200,000~84,000

Stat Soft Caps — Where to Stop Levelling

Elden Ring uses a soft-cap system: each stat gives diminishing returns above certain thresholds. Knowing where soft caps are lets you maximise damage per rune spent rather than chasing the hard cap at 99.

Offensive Stats (Str, Dex, Int, Fth, Arc)

  • 1st soft cap60
  • 2nd soft cap80
  • Hard cap99

Returns drop sharply above 60, and again above 80. Most builds stop at 80 for their primary stat.

Defensive Stats (Vigor, Mind, Endurance)

  • Vigor 1st soft cap40
  • Vigor 2nd soft cap60
  • Mind / End soft cap50–60

60 Vigor is the community standard for PvE. HP returns per point drop significantly above it.

The most popular PvP bracket is RL125–150. At RL150 you can comfortably reach 80 in one primary damage stat, 60 Vigor, a useful secondary stat, and 25+ in equip-load stats. Going beyond RL150 is mainly a PvE endgame or theory-crafting choice.

Best Rune Farming Spots in Elden Ring (2024)

The meta farming spots in Elden Ring range from early-game passive enemies to the late-game Mohgwyn Palace cheese. Here are the top locations ranked by runes per hour, with and without buff items.

Palace Approach Crow — Mohgwyn Palace

#1 Fastest

Shoot the sleeping giant crow near the Palace Approach Ledge-Road grace with any ranged attack (even a pebble or throwing knife). The bird dies in one hit and rewards 11,000 runes base per 30-second loop. With Gold Scarab + Fowl Foot that's ~17,200 runes every 30 seconds, or roughly 2M+ runes/hr.

Access: Reach Mohgwyn Palace via the Varre questline (no story progress required) or through the Consecrated Snowfield secret passage.

Albinauric Stack — Mohgwyn Palace

#2 Reliable

Clear the dense crowd of Albinaurics near the Palace Approach grace using AOE spells or ash-of-war skills from horseback. Each full sweep yields ~50,000 runes and takes 2–3 minutes. Strong alternative when you need fewer runs for muscle memory.

Farum Azula Beastmen + Haligtree Pests

Late-Game

Dense enemy clusters in both Crumbling Farum Azula (Tempest-Facing Balcony) and Miquella's Haligtree deliver 35–45K runes per run. Best for players who have progressed naturally to these areas and want to level locally without fast-traveling to Mohgwyn.

Shadow of the Erdtree — DLC Levelling Requirements

The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC (June 2024) introduced a new progression system — Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes — that scales damage dealt and received independently of your character level. This means a RL60 character in the DLC can perform similarly to a RL200 character if they've collected enough Fragments.

That said, the community recommends entering the DLC at RL120–150 minimum with 50–60 Vigor, simply because base HP and resistances still matter for survival. Use this calculator to see how many runes stand between you and that entry point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum level in Elden Ring?
The maximum character level in Elden Ring is 713, which is reached when every stat is at 99. The Wretch class starts at level 1 with all stats at 10. Reaching max level from 1 requires approximately 1.69 billion runes — a purely theoretical achievement given the time required even at peak farming rates.
Does Gold Scarab stack with Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot?
Yes, they stack multiplicatively. Gold Scarab adds 20% and Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot adds 30%, combining for a ×1.56 total multiplier (1.20 × 1.30 = 1.56). Using both cuts your farming time by ~36% compared to no buffs. The Fowl Foot lasts 3 minutes and is sold by Patches and others, so use one just before starting each run loop.
What level should I be for the Elden Ring endgame?
For a first playthrough, the community general guidance: Limgrave/Stormveil ~RL20–30, Liurnia ~RL40–50, Leyndell ~RL80–90, Mountaintops/Haligtree ~RL100–120, and final bosses ~RL120–150. None of these are hard requirements — Elden Ring is designed to be beaten at any level — but these ranges give you a comfortable experience without over-levelling.
How accurate is the rune count in this calculator?
Very accurate. The formula used is the community-verified polynomial datamined from Elden Ring's game files, cross-referenced against the Fextralife wiki and multiple player-collected data sets. For levels 1–11 the calculator uses hardcoded values from in-game testing. The result should match your in-game level-up screen exactly.
What's the fastest way to reach level 150 from level 1?
Level 1 → 150 requires approximately 2.6 million runes. At the Palace Approach Crow spot with both buffs active (~17,200 runes per 30-second run), that's roughly 76 runs or ~38 minutes of active farming. The most time-efficient route for a fresh character: do the Varre questline early (available from Liurnia without beating Godrick), unlock Mohgwyn Palace, and farm the crow with both rune buffs active.
Do runes carry over when I start New Game Plus?
Your character level, stats, and equipment carry over to New Game Plus — but unspent runes in your inventory do not carry over. Spend them before triggering NG+ or you'll lose them. Your farming history and level don't reset; you continue building on the same character across all NG+ cycles.
