How Roblox Game Revenue Works
Roblox games earn Robux through three independent channels: game passes (one-time unlocks), developer products (repeatable in-game purchases), and Premium Payouts (a time-spent allocation from Roblox Premium subscriptions). Most successful games combine all three rather than relying on a single source.
Revenue flows through Roblox's platform, which takes a 30 % fee on every marketplace transaction. Creators receive 70 % of all Robux spent on their game passes and developer products. Premium Payouts are distributed separately and are not subject to this fee — they arrive as a direct allocation from Roblox's subscription revenue pool.
To convert Robux to real money, creators use the Developer Exchange (DevEx) programme. The standard rate is 285.71 Robux = $1 USD. DevEx has minimum payout thresholds and eligibility requirements — see the official DevEx page for current limits.
The Three Revenue Sources
Game Passes
Permanent one-time unlocks. A player buys a game pass once and keeps its benefit forever across all sessions. Common passes include 2× XP multipliers, VIP access, extra inventory slots, and cosmetic items. Prices typically range from 99 R$ (impulse buy) to 1,999 R$ (premium tier). Because each player can only purchase a given pass once, revenue from game passes scales with new daily visitors, not returning ones.
Developer Products
Repeatable in-game purchases that can be bought any number of times by the same player. Currency packs, consumable boosts, extra lives, and daily login bonuses are the most common forms. Unlike game passes, developer product revenue scales with both new and returning players — a highly engaged player base generates recurring income every session. This makes dev products the primary revenue driver for well-retained games.
Premium Payouts
Roblox distributes a share of its Premium subscription revenue to games based on how much time Premium subscribers spend in each game. This payout is passive — it requires no purchase action from players. Roblox does not disclose the exact per-minute rate; the calculator uses a conservative community estimate of 0.007 Robux per Premium-minute. Premium subscribers also tend to spend 3–4× more on game passes and developer products than free users, amplifying their total value per visit.
Conversion Rate Benchmarks by Genre
Conversion rate — the percentage of daily visitors who make at least one purchase — is the single most important lever in Roblox monetisation. It varies dramatically by genre because different game loops create different psychological purchase triggers. Data sourced from Roblox DevForum postmortems and community analytics aggregates.
| Genre | Avg | Good | Great |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simulator | 4.0 % | 7.0 % | 12.0 % |
| Tycoon | 3.0 % | 5.5 % | 9.0 % |
| RPG | 2.5 % | 4.5 % | 8.0 % |
| Roleplay | 2.0 % | 3.5 % | 6.0 % |
| FPS / Shooter | 1.5 % | 2.8 % | 5.0 % |
| Horror | 1.2 % | 2.2 % | 4.0 % |
| Obby | 0.8 % | 1.5 % | 3.0 % |
How to Use This Calculator
1. Enter Your Traffic
Use your Roblox Creator Dashboard to find daily visit counts. Select your genre so the tool can benchmark your conversion rate against similar games. If you don't know your conversion rate yet, start with your genre's average as a baseline.
2. Set Up Your Monetisation
Enter the average price across all your game passes, the percentage of converting users who actually buy a pass, your average developer product price, and how often converting users purchase per day. For games with multiple passes at different prices, use the sales-weighted average.
3. Configure Premium Payouts
Your Creator Dashboard shows the percentage of your players with Roblox Premium. The default of 15 % is the platform average — premium-attractive games (long sessions, cosmetics, social features) often run 20–25 %. Session length drives the Premium Payout estimate directly.
4. Read the Growth Advice
The advice box compares your inputs against the genre benchmark and surfaces the highest-leverage improvement. Conversion rate is always the first priority — a 1 % conversion lift on 50,000 daily visits is worth 500 extra paying users per day. Use the XP Grind Timer to estimate how long it takes for a player to hit your natural purchase gates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this estimate?
For game pass and developer product revenue, the calculation is exact given your inputs — it applies Roblox's published 30 % fee and the official DevEx rate. The Premium Payout figure uses a community-derived estimate (0.007 R$/Premium-minute) since Roblox does not publish the per-minute rate. Treat it as a directional figure, not a guarantee. Your Creator Dashboard shows your actual Premium Payout after payouts process.
What is the minimum DevEx withdrawal?
As of 2024, the minimum DevEx exchange is 30,000 Robux (approximately $105 USD at the standard rate). There are also account age, group membership, and verification requirements. Check the DevEx eligibility requirements before planning for a first withdrawal. Use our Robux Calculator for spot Robux-to-USD conversions.
Why is my conversion rate the most important metric?
Conversion rate is the highest-leverage input because it multiplies across all revenue sources. Doubling your conversion rate from 2 % to 4 % doubles game pass buyers, doubles developer product volume, and does not change Premium Payouts. Growing daily visits by 2× achieves the same result but requires much more effort — discovery, social media, and Roblox search all take time. Fix conversion first.
What is the "Pass Buy Rate" field?
Not every paying user buys a game pass — some players only purchase developer products (currency packs, boosts). The pass buy rate is the percentage of converting users who make a game pass purchase specifically. If your game has no developer products and all purchases are game passes, set this to 100 %. For games with strong dev product loops, this is often 40–60 %.
How do I increase Premium visitor percentage?
Premium subscribers are attracted to games with exclusive content. Adding Premium-only cosmetics, a dedicated server, or a monthly currency bonus for Premium members signals value to this demographic. Premium players are significantly more likely to also purchase game passes and developer products — each percentage point of Premium share is worth more than a single percentage point of overall conversion.
How does this compare to Fortnite creator payouts?
Fortnite's Creative 2.0 engagement payout is based on island playtime across all Fortnite players, not direct purchases in your experience. Roblox's model is more direct — you price your passes and products, and Roblox takes 30 %. Use our Fortnite Payout Calculator to compare creator economy platforms side by side.
