How the Tip Calculator Works
Two modes handle every restaurant scenario. Even Split divides the total (bill + tip) equally across everyone at the table. Custom Split lets each person pay their exact share percentage of both the bill and the tip — useful when one person orders steak and another orders a salad.
How to Calculate a Tip
A tip (also called a gratuity) is a voluntary payment added on top of the bill as a reward for good service. To calculate it, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100 — this gives you the tip amount in dollars. Add it to the bill to get the total you owe.
Tip Amount = Bill x (Tip% / 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Example: an $85 bill with an 18% tip. Tip = $85 × 0.18 = $15.30. Total = $85 + $15.30 = $100.30.
How to Split a Bill Evenly
Even splitting is the simplest approach when everyone at the table agrees to divide the total equally. Calculate the full total with tip first, then divide by the number of people.
Total = Bill + (Bill x TipPct/100)
Per Person = Total / Number of People
Example: $100.30 total split among 4 people = $25.08 each. Note that rounding means individual shares may add up to $0.01 more or less than the true total — this is normal and expected with any bill splitter.
How to Split a Bill with Custom Percentages
When each person ordered different amounts, an even split feels unfair. The custom split mode lets you assign each person a percentage of the pre-tip bill — their share of both the bill and the tip is then calculated proportionally.
Each person's bill share = Bill x PersonPct/100
Each person's tip share = Tip x PersonPct/100
Each person's total = Bill share + Tip share
Example: $120 bill, 20% tip ($24), Alice ordered 60% of the food and Bob 40%. Alice pays $72.00 + $14.40 tip = $86.40. Bob pays $48.00 + $9.60 tip = $57.60. The tip is shared in the same ratio as the food — each person tips proportionally for what they consumed.

Tip Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill amount by 0.20. for a $75 bill: $75 × 0.20 = $15.00 tip. Add it to the bill to get the total: $75 + $15 = $90.00. A quick mental shortcut is to find 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place left) then double it for 20%.
Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Most etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since the server's service applies to the food and drink — not to the tax collected on behalf of the government. In practice, tipping on the post-tax amount is common in the US and results in a slightly higher tip, which most servers appreciate.
How do you split a bill unequally?
Switch to Custom Split mode and enter each person's share as a percentage of the pre-tip bill. The percentages must sum to 100%. The calculator then divides both the bill and the tip proportionally, so each person's tip contribution matches what they ordered. This is for situations where one person had an expensive meal and another had a light dish.
What is an appropriate tip percentage at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15–20% is considered standard for sit-down restaurant service. Many diners tip 18% for good service and 20–25% for excellent service. Tipping customs differ significantly by country — in Japan and much of East Asia, tipping is not customary and can even be considered rude.
How do you split a bill when everyone orders different amounts?
Assign each person a percentage of the total bill equal to what they ordered. If the total food came to $100 and Person A ordered $60 worth, Person A's share is 60%. Enter those percentages in Custom Split mode. The calculator handles the arithmetic automatically, including their proportional share of the tip.
Does the tip get split evenly when using even-split mode?
Yes. In even split mode, the tip is included in the total before dividing by the number of people, so each person contributes an equal dollar amount toward both the food and the gratuity. If you want to split the bill unevenly but still share the tip proportionally, use Custom Split mode instead.
