What Is Percentage Difference?

A percentage difference calculator measures the gap between two values relative to their arithmetic average. It is useful when neither value is the original, baseline, or expected value. The calculation treats both inputs equally, so comparing 80 with 100 gives the same percentage difference as comparing 100 with 80.

This symmetric comparison is useful for repeated measurements, supplier prices, model estimates, test results, laboratory observations, and other pairs measured in the same units. It reports how far apart the values are, but it does not identify an increase, a decrease, statistical significance, or which value is more accurate.

Percentage Difference Uses the Average of Both Values

This worked chart compares 80 and 100 on one scale and shows why the denominator is 90.

The bars represent 80, 90, and 100 proportionally. The absolute gap is 20, and that gap is 22.22% of the two values' average.

How to Calculate Percentage Difference

First, subtract one value from the other and take the absolute value so the gap is non-negative. Second, add the two values and divide by two to find their average. Finally, divide the absolute difference by the average and multiply by 100.

For 45 and 50, the absolute difference is 5 and the average is 47.5. Dividing 5 by 47.5 gives approximately 0.105263, which becomes 10.53% after multiplying by 100. Reversing the values leaves both the difference and average unchanged.

Percentage Difference Formula

The standard formula is |A - B| / ((A + B) / 2) x 100. The vertical bars mean absolute value, which removes the sign from the subtraction. The denominator uses both values equally instead of choosing one as a baseline.

For non-negative inputs, the result ranges from 0% to 200%. Equal positive values produce 0%. If one value is zero and the other is positive, the absolute difference equals the positive value while the average is half that value, producing 200%.

Percentage Difference vs Percentage Change

Percentage difference

Order does not matter

80 vs 100 = 22.22%

100 vs 80 = 22.22%

Both values share the average as the reference.

Percentage change

Direction changes the result

80 to 100 = 25% increase

100 to 80 = 20% decrease

The original value provides the directional baseline.

Use percentage change when one value is explicitly old, original, expected, or a control. Use percentage difference when the values have equal status. Choosing the wrong formula can produce a mathematically correct number that answers the wrong question.

Worked Percentage Difference Examples

Percentage difference|A - B| / ((A + B) / 2) x 10080 vs 100 = 22.22%No
Percentage change(new - original) / |original| x 10080 to 100 = 25%Yes
Absolute difference|A - B||80 - 100| = 20No
Percentage-point differencerate B - rate A45% to 50% = 5 pointsYes

Two test results of 92 and 88 have an absolute difference of 4 and an average of 90, so their percentage difference is 4.44%. Estimates of 1,250 and 1,325 differ by 75 around an average of 1,287.5, producing approximately 5.83%.

Percentage points answer a separate question. A rate moving from 45% to 50% changes by 5 percentage points, while its relative percentage change is about 11.11%. Always name the measure to prevent ambiguity.

When Should You Use Percentage Difference?

Use it for two measurements of the same quantity when neither is privileged as the baseline. Examples include two instruments measuring one object, two analysts estimating the same cost, two stores listing the same product, or two models predicting the same outcome. Both values must use compatible units and scales.

Do not use percentage difference by itself to claim agreement, accuracy, precision, or statistical equivalence. Whether 2% is small depends on the measurement process, acceptable tolerance, uncertainty, and domain. A result can describe the numerical separation without explaining its cause.

This calculator rejects negative values because the ordinary average-based formula becomes ambiguous when signed quantities cross or approach zero. For directional signed comparisons, identify an original value and use percentage change instead. Both values equal to zero are also undefined because the formula would divide zero by zero.

Percentage Difference Calculator FAQ

What is the formula for percentage difference?

Take the absolute difference between the values, divide it by their arithmetic mean, and multiply by 100. Written as a formula, that is |A - B| / ((A + B) / 2) x 100.

How do I calculate the percentage difference between two numbers?

Find the positive gap between the numbers and their average. Divide the gap by the average, then convert the result to a percentage.

What is the difference between percentage difference and percentage change?

Percentage difference is symmetric and uses the average of both values. Percentage change is directional and divides by an identified original value.

Can percentage difference be more than 100 percent?

Yes. For non-negative inputs, it can range up to 200%, which occurs when one value is zero and the other is positive.

What is the percentage difference when both values are the same?

The percentage difference is 0% because the absolute difference is zero. This is valid when the common value is positive.

Why is percentage difference undefined when both values are zero?

The difference and average are both zero, so the formula requires dividing zero by zero. That ratio is undefined rather than 0%.

Does it matter which value I enter first?

No. Absolute difference and arithmetic average are symmetric, so reversing the values produces the same percentage difference.

Can I use negative numbers in a percentage difference formula?

Signed quantities require context because an arithmetic mean can be zero or negative. This calculator rejects them instead of silently switching to a different denominator.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percent describes a relative ratio per hundred. Percentage points are the direct subtraction between two percentage rates, such as 50% minus 45% equaling 5 points.
