Calculating an exact age sounds straightforward — subtract the birth year from the current year. But that naive approach gives the wrong answer near your birthday. If you were born on December 25, 1995, and today is June 27, 2026, you have not yet turned 31 — you are still 30 years old. Years: 2026 − 2000 = 26 (birthday in Jan, already passed in 2026)

Why borrowing matters: If the target day is earlier in the month than the birth day (e.g., born on the 20th, today is the 5th), the calculator borrows days from the previous calendar month. This accounts for varying month lengths including February in leap years.
